[ENG.]#20 PD에게 물어봐: 영혼을 갈아 넣어 만든 투전방 세트장! 어디까지 둘러봤니?
Ask the PD: Gambling den set that bears traces of labor
The gambling den is an extremely important place where
all of the doings of ‘The Royal Gambler’ take place:
All of the emotions, fates, acts of vengeance, and emotional complications!
The majority of questions were about ‘the gambling den’.
Type the key words : Dae-gil / Gambling den
Drama set ? Gambling den ? Games played at the gambling den
In order to scratch your itch, let me introduce the set of the gambling den, the main backdrop of the drama.
Designer Han Jeong-hun (A&T Art Team)
“The overall atmosphere of the gambling den and the game rules were designed after discussion with the directing team.”
Q. All of the games looked interesting when Man-geum walked into the gambling den in the first episode. Were the games created using historical sources?
“The games appearing in the gambling den: the loach race, mouse race, diving beetle roulette, and guessing which room the jumping frog is going to enter, were applied to modern roulette and casino games and then were reinterpreted in a Joseon-esque atmosphere.”
“We had a hard time because the loach and mouse races didn’t work the way we wanted them to. They were supposed to move, but they didn’t. Haha.”
“We worked hard on crafting everything, but we really devoted ourselves to the gigantic chandelier.”
“Since it doesn’t use light bulbs, we have to light each candle every time we film. We’re being extra careful with the fire because everything on the set including the floor, tables, and all the furniture are made of wood.”
During the rehearsal for the gambling den scene
Joseon style roulette: There’s a motor behind the pillar! I’m going to hit the bullseye!
“The filming site is split between the first floor set and the second floor set.”
The second floor is where Yeoning watched the match between Dae-gil and Lee In-jwa.
The first floor is where the big match took place as Dae-gil, looking for revenge, gambled to cut off Lee In-jwa’s hand.
“We had to be extremely careful about safety because we had to film with the two separate sets crammed with lots of extras all at once. We used way thicker and stronger materials for the floor of the sets than we would normally.”
“We had more than 200 extras for the early episodes of the drama. So we needed strong and firm sets that could hold the weight.
“It takes a lot of time just to rehearse one scene because we have to figure out the traffic flow for all 200 people.”
Q. It looks like there’s a special atmosphere whenever the gambling den is shown on screen. Do you use special effects?
“We used lots of sawdust to create the feeling of dust-blowing around naturally and we used an underground space in order to set the dark tone and create the gambling den’s unique atmosphere.”
The royal Gambler set Designer Han Jeong-hun (A&T Art Team)
“I think I feel proud when you, the audience, enjoy our drama. We are going to do our best to make sure that you are pleased with the drama’s sets and historical props which we make with imagination, so that you can lose yourself in the show.”
Before one episode of the drama could air…
All the passion of the design team, set team, prop team, makeup team, costume team, special effect team, lighting team, and film team was distilled into every single scene and cut.
